Pickleball in Brisbane: what to expect

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in Australia, and once you play a game you'll get why. It's part tennis, part table tennis, part badminton, played with a paddle and a plastic ball on a court about a quarter the size of a tennis court. The small court means long rallies instead of long sprints, so it suits total beginners and ex-racquet-sport players equally well. Social pickleball is at its best as a weekly comp: doubles, round robin, a ladder that matters just enough, and plenty of chat between points.

How SportUP pickleball comps will work

When pickleball launches in Brisbane, it'll run like every SportUP comp: one night a week, short seasons, refs and gear sorted, tunes on, and a ladder that matters just enough. Book as a team or join solo and we'll find you one. We already run social comps at 29 venues across Brisbane, from the CBD out to the suburbs. The first pickleball venue will land wherever the waitlist is strongest, so get your side of town signed up.

And every comp is backed by our Pinky Promise. If you don't absolutely love your first game, we'll find you a better fit, cover your next game free, or give your money back.

Pickleball Brisbane FAQs

When will pickleball start in Brisbane?

As soon as the waitlist is big enough to fill a first season, usually 6 to 8 teams' worth of players. Every signup genuinely moves it forward, and waitlist members hear first, before we announce it anywhere else.

Do I need a team to play pickleball in Brisbane?

No. Join the waitlist solo, and when we launch you can book as an individual and we'll place you in a team. Plenty of our current players started exactly that way.

Is pickleball hard to learn?

It's one of the easiest sports to pick up. The court is small, the ball is slow, and the scoring makes sense by the end of your second game. Most people are rallying within ten minutes of first holding a paddle.

Do I need my own pickleball paddle?

No. Like all our comps, we bring the gear. Paddles and balls are provided, so you just need shoes you can move in. If you fall in love with it and buy your own paddle, that's between you and your bank account.

How much will pickleball cost?

Pricing is locked in at launch, but SportUP comps usually work out around the cost of a takeaway meal per game, with refs, venue and gear included. The waitlist gets pricing and first pick of spots before anyone else.

Where in Brisbane will pickleball be played?

We already run social comps at 29 venues across Brisbane, from the CBD out to the suburbs. The first pickleball venue will land wherever the waitlist is strongest, so get your side of town signed up.

Can't wait that long?

Fair enough. We already run netball, basketball, soccer and volleyball comps every week in Brisbane. Solo or with a team, there's a spot if you want one.
